Locate ancient megalithic wonders on the Malta Neolithic Monuments Map
The island of Malta, along with its neighbour Gozo are home to some of the oldest temple complexes in the world. This interactive Malta Neolithic Monuments Map not only includes the incredible clover-leaf design temples, but also underground hypogea, tombs and menhirs.
The ancient temples were constructed in the 3rd and 4th centuries BCE by skilled builders who utilised both coralline and globigerina limestone in their composition. The megalithic structures are remarkable, with huge upright standing stones and horizontal blocks making up inner and outer walls.
<Below is a list of the sites featured on the Malta Neolithic Monuments Map categorised by island and then type. Hypogea are underground structures, while temples are always constructed above ground. Temples have ritual function, while hypogea seem to be both necropolis and temple in one. Both islands have tombs from the era, as well as menhirs. Throughout the landscape are mysterious “cart ruts”, such as at Misraħ Għar il-Kbir. These have not been included, as they are certainly of a later date and are likely not connected to the sites on the Malta Neolithic Monuments Map.
